This week we have some new and exciting events such as QUEST’s first collaborative event with the minorities in the engineering school, a screening and discussion of important issues in Kenya and Malaysia, great events from Wharton Alliance and QSA’s fall dance, and a roundtable dialogue on Proposition 8 hosted by Lambda Alliance. Dennie will be wearing a hat of love for everyone in the community.

Students for Global Health Present Screening/Discussion of Tumaini and Pecah Lobang

Students for Global Health, Office of Global Health Affairs and the School of Nursing present a screening and post-screening discussion of Tumaini and Pecah Lobang, the stories of obstacles faced by female sex workers in Kenya and one transsexual Muslim sex worker in Malaysia.

QSA will be holding its annual Fall Dance on Thursday the 13th.  This year's theme is "O", which promises to be everything you've come to expect and more.  So throw on that sexy top, accept that the 9am class on Friday just isn't happening, and come on out to XO Lounge next Thursday.
Tickets will be sold on the Walk during the week of the dance for $5, or you can pay $7 at the door.

Lambda Alliance General Body Meeting

This week's Lambda General Body Meeting will focus on Proposition 8 (and similar measures passed on other states) and what it means for us as young LGBTQA people in America.  The discussion will deal more specifically with what we should have done as college students and what we should do moving on.  We strongly encourage everyone who has an interest to attend!


 

Active Minds – National Mental Health on Campus Conference

Does mental health affect you?  Are you interested in promoting a dialogue about mental health on Penn’s campus? On Friday and Saturday, November 14th and 15th, Active Minds is holding our annual National Mental Health on Campus Conference ON PENN’S CAMPUS.

Active Minds, is the only national nonprofit organization dedicated to utilizing the young adult voice to raise mental health awareness among college students.  We have over 160 chapters on campuses across the U.S. with students working to increase awareness of mental health, provide information and resources about mental health and mental illness and encourage students to seek help as soon as needed.

Visit www.activemindsoncampus.org/news/conference.php to learn more about and register for the conference which is FREE for all Penn students and include various guest speakers and a special dinner. Additionally, Penn’s Active Minds chapter need help with the conference and would like volunteers who are willing to give 1-2 hours of their time to man a registration table or help set up parts of the conference. All volunteers will be rewarded with a gift from the national office.

Dating Violence in the Queer Community

Think that dating violence only happens between a man and a woman?  Unfortunately, same-sex violence is a very real and serious issue that faces people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.  Join QSA next Wednesday for a discussion and panel on dating violence in the queer community, moderated by Ninah Harris, sexual and relationship violence resource consultant.

Delaware Valley Legacy Fund TOY Benefit 2008 Volunteering

Due By: Friday, November 21

Volunteers needed on December 5th for the 2nd annual TOY Benefit, held by the Delaware Valley Legacy Fund, from 5-10pm at the Marketplace Design Center at 2400 Market.  The Delaware Valley Legacy Fund (DVLF) strives to increase philanthropy and grantmaking to support the community needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex (LGBTI) and straight-allied communities.  The benefit supports both the DVLF and children at CHOP with HIV.  Volunteers are needed for staffing the sign-in table, collecting money and toys, and taking photos of the event.  Please contact Tom Martin at martin.thomas.r@gmail.com if interested.
